What It Is
The TecUpdater P17 is a dashboard-mounted head up display that combines OBD2 diagnostic data and GPS tracking on a single screen. It is not a projector — the display is a self-contained screen unit that sits on the dashboard and shows live driving data in a format that is readable without taking your eyes off the road for more than a moment. The screen supports multiple interface layouts that can be switched freely, so the driver can choose what data is shown and how it is arranged.
The unit has an inbuilt light sensor that adjusts screen brightness automatically based on ambient conditions — brighter in daylight, dimmer at night — without any manual adjustment required.

What Problem It Solves
The instrument cluster on most Indian market cars was designed to show the minimum required information. Speed, fuel, and temperature — and in many cases not even all three clearly. Checking RPM, monitoring battery voltage, or keeping an eye on coolant temperature while driving means glancing away from the road and into the cluster, which is typically positioned lower in the line of sight.
The P17 places selected data at a higher position on the dashboard, closer to the driver’s natural forward sightline. It draws engine data from the OBD2 port and GPS data from its inbuilt receiver simultaneously, giving the driver a consolidated view of what matters without instrument cluster dependency.
Installation Logic
Connect the OBD2 cable to the OBD2 port under the dashboard. Mount the P17 on the dashboard using either the suction cup mount or the included double-sided tape depending on your preference and dashboard surface. The suction cup mount is 360-degree adjustable, allowing the screen angle to be set precisely. The unit powers on automatically when the ignition is on and powers off when the engine stops. No wire cutting, no tools, no permanent modification required. Setup takes approximately three minutes.
Behaviour Explanation
Once the OBD2 cable is connected and the unit is powered, it begins pulling data from the car’s ECU via OBD2 and from the inbuilt GPS receiver simultaneously. The driver can switch between interface layouts freely — each layout presents the same underlying data in a different visual arrangement, with varying emphasis on speed, RPM, fuel consumption, temperature, or GPS parameters depending on the selected view.
The inbuilt light sensor monitors ambient brightness continuously and adjusts the screen backlight without input from the driver. In direct sunlight the screen remains clearly readable. At night brightness reduces automatically to avoid distraction or glare.
OBD2 mode requires an OBD2-compliant vehicle. GPS mode functions on all cars regardless of OBD2 status.
Key Compatibility
Compatible with all OBD2-compliant vehicles. In India this covers most petrol cars from approximately 2005 onwards and diesel cars from approximately 2008 onwards, though exact compliance varies by manufacturer and model year.
GPS mode is available on all vehicles regardless of OBD2 compatibility. Not all OBD2 parameters will be available on every car — displayed data depends on what the car’s ECU reports. Parameters such as turbo pressure or transmission temperature are only available on cars whose ECU supports those PIDs.
Who Should Buy
Drivers who want a clean, readable display of live engine and GPS data positioned higher on the dashboard for easier reference while driving. Suitable for daily commuters who want speed and temperature monitoring, and for performance-oriented drivers who want RPM, fuel consumption, and voltage visible at all times. Works on any OBD2-compliant car in India.
Who Should Not Buy
Pre-OBD2 vehicles will have GPS mode available but no engine data. If your primary requirement is live engine parameters, confirm your car is OBD2 compliant before ordering. Not suitable for anyone expecting windshield projection — the P17 is a dashboard screen display, not a projector.
FAQs
Q: Does this project onto the windshield? A: No. The P17 is a dashboard-mounted screen display. It does not project onto the windshield or glass.
Q: Does the screen brightness adjust automatically? A: Yes. The inbuilt light sensor adjusts screen brightness continuously based on ambient light — brighter in daylight, dimmer at night.
Q: Will this work on my car? A: It is compatible with all OBD2-compliant vehicles. Most Indian market petrol cars from 2005 onwards and diesel cars from 2008 onwards are OBD2 compliant. GPS mode works on all cars regardless of OBD2 status.
Q: What mounting options are included? A: Both a 360-degree adjustable suction cup mount and double-sided tape are included. Either can be used depending on your dashboard surface and preference.
Q: Does it power off automatically? A: Yes. The unit powers on and off with the ignition automatically via the OBD2 connection.
Q: Can I choose what data is displayed? A: Yes. Multiple interface layouts are available and can be switched freely. Each layout shows data in a different arrangement — the underlying data source remains the same.
