Many Volkswagen and Skoda cars sold in India — especially lower and mid variants — come without a footwell light or a glovebox light from the factory, even though the mounting slot and, in some cases, the switch position are already built in. The wiring and the bulb were left out to cut cost, not because the car can’t support it. A footwell light kit adds a small downward-facing lamp under the dashboard or front seats. Glovebox Light Kit — Pick Your Platform

None of these cars came with a glovebox light on Indian variants, even though the glovebox on several of them already has the physical slot and switch position built in. Both kits below use a fuse tap for power and involve no cutting into the car’s existing wiring.

How to Pick the Right Kit

• Check your platform first. Polo, Vento, Ameo, and Rapid are PQ-platform cars. Taigun, Virtus, and Kushaq are MQB-platform cars. Skoda Slavia and Kylaq compatibility varies by kit — check the Compatible Cars column above for the specific product, since it can differ between the footwell and glovebox kits.
• Full kit vs. replacement unit. If your footwell or boot light already exists but has stopped working or looks broken, you want the OEM-style replacement unit, not the full kit. If there’s no light or wiring there at all, you need the full kit.
• Fuse tap vs. BCM coding. Every kit here can run off a simple fuse tap with no coding. The MQB footwell kit additionally offers BCM coding as an optional, OEM-style upgrade for the front lights — see the Hidden Feature Unlocks guide for what coding on these cars involves.
• Wire cutting. None of these kits require cutting into your car’s factory wiring. The one exception is the PQ glovebox kit, which needs a one-time mounting cutout in the glovebox itself (not the wiring).
• Bulb type. The footwell and boot units are supplied with a halogen bulb by default; a T10 LED upgrade is optional on every kit for brighter, whiter light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my VW or Skoda already have a footwell light or glovebox light from the factory?

Most PQ and MQB cars sold in India do not, even on variants where the mounting slot or switch position is already built into the dashboard, seat area, or glovebox. The wiring, bulb, and in some cases the switch were left out to reduce cost on lower and mid variants.

Can I add a glovebox light without cutting any wires?

Yes for both platforms. Power comes from a fuse tap, not a spliced wire, and the harness connects to the light unit with an OEM-type coupler. The only cutting involved on the PQ glovebox kit is a one-time mounting cutout in the glovebox itself, not the car’s wiring.

Do I need BCM coding for these kits?

No kit requires coding to function. The MQB footwell kit offers BCM coding as an optional, OEM-style upgrade for the front lights only; the rear footwell lights and every other kit on this page are plug-and-play or fuse-tap powered with no coding involved.

What’s the difference between the Boot & Footwell Light Replacement and the full Footwell & Boot Light Kit?

The Replacement unit is only for a car that already has factory boot or footwell wiring and a connector in place — it swaps in as a direct OEM-style replacement for a failed or broken light. The full kit is for a car with no footwell or boot light wiring at all, and includes the fuse tap and harness needed to add one.

Is Skoda Slavia PQ platform or MQB platform?

For the footwell kit, TecUpdater lists Slavia alongside the PQ-platform cars (Polo, Vento, Ameo, Rapid).
